Hibiscus 101: the brightener

Hibiscus 101: the brightener

Hibiscus is known for its rich level of antioxidants, including vitamin C and beta-carotene.
Its bright pink color comes from anthocyanin which give this flower anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory power.
For skin, antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress (which can contribute to aging skin) + the inflammation that comes with it.
According to Melissa Nieves, LND, R.D., MPH, vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen internally and topically. If we want to dive into the science of vitamin C a little deeper, certain enzymes require vitamin C to stabilize and cross-link collagen molecules AND support collagen gene expression...okay that was a lot of science...
Hibiscus has a TON of other benefits too. It is a great natural source of AHAs. Hibiscus has malic acid + citric acid which can gently brighten, refresh and exfoliate the skin.
